Jackson Hole Airport
.. I guess Elk are big here!
The Grand Tetons
Looking at the mountains it's hard to believe we'll be up there tomorrow night.
Huckleberry Margarita Time
Jackson Hole has a couple of cute places to eat and drink. We got our rental car, went grocery shopping, and are now chilling with drinks before dinner and before we drive to our first camp site.
Grand Teton Visitor Center
We stop to pick up our camping permits and bear containers.
Driving towards our campsite takes us past the Grand Tetons - what a view!
Our first Bison sighting
Day 2: Teton Crest Hike
On our way from our campsite to the Jenny Lodge we stop to take the requisite NP sign.
There was a chipmunk there too, but John refused to take a picture of it.
Heading towards Jenny lodge - the lght is amazing
We stopped at a pull out when we saw lots of people (we were hoping they were watching Elk or some other animal ). Turns out it was just a pretty view of the moutain.
"The Top of the World"
We took the Aerial Tram up to the top to start our hike to 10,450 feet. Too bad the wildfires obstructed our views.
we had some trouble getting from the Jenny Lodge to the Tram . We ended up running into a couple who was doing the same hike and we shared the taxi with them.
Teton Crest Hike
Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel
Mountain Bog Gentian
Appear out of rocks and shady moist crevices in subalpine zones and the spots are meant to lure insects inside.
The picture does not do this justice - everything was blue!
pollinated by moths and hummingbirds
Tall chiming Bells (borage family)
This picture does not do the beautiful flowers justice.
Seems like around every corner we are surprised by an even more spectacular wild flower array
Deformed Mountain Larkspur
Grand Teton Crest Trail (from Tram towards Marion Lake)
the view is just amazing, and the flowers just keep on coming. I just wish it didn't go up and down so much! :)
It's an adorable red one too. Too bad it wasn't in the mood to socialize.
the path continues...
and the views continue to amaze - except it looks like we're going back down only to go back up again!! WHY would they do that???
We finally arrive at Lake Marion. Only ~ 8 miles left to go!!! Also - that rise behind the like doesn't look like much but it is deceptively steep and looooooong.
view back towards lake Marion after we climbed up the switch backs
the terrain now changes. We no longer have to deal with steep up and down hill climbs.
Are we there yet? The Grand is getting closer!
Day 3: Grand Teton Crest Trail
Death Canyon Shelf
Death Canyon Shelf
Yellow bellied Marmot
we started to finally see some animals.
yellow bellied Marmot
Now I understand why it's called that - it looks sad....
